Family used to be a large part of the influence on a child's life. Today, with the internet, television, and other sources of influence, parenting can be more difficult than ever before. When children see barely legal celebrities partying all the time and watch people online doing things unheard of in generations past, it's not hard for them to want to do the same things. However, as a parent, we have to learn how to approach all of these issues. Some parents want to turn a blind eye to things like teenage sex, drinking, immorality, and other serious issues of youth today, but that's not going to keep your kids safe, nor will it make them respectful, responsible adults.
You have to know what your children are watching, reading, and getting involved with in the online world. You have to teach a Christian foundation of love, respect, and other important principles. If you properly instill these values in your children, they will have no desire to do anything less than live the good, Christian life that they know with their faith as a central focus. Of course, when they are in public school, where their faith usually isn't welcome, it can be difficult for them to stay on track.
Teach your children discipline from a young age. Make sure that they understand the power of respect and the morals that you teach so that they can utilize them in their daily lives. It can be hard to instill discipline in children in a world where such things are abased and practically forgotten for the sake of everything else going on in the world. Even some good Christian children have fallen by way of the entitlement generation, feeling that the world owes them something. To keep your kids out of this habit or way of thinking, you need to make sure that they understand their faith and know that the world owes them nothing. If anything, it is what they owe the world as a servant of the Lord.
Christian parenting is not nearly as easy as it used to be. There is so much more temptation to overcome and so many things have changed in the world around us. However, if you center your family on God, just as you have centered your life, it will be easy for you to raise respectful, disciplined children who will be leaders of tomorrow. With God, all things are possible. Even parenting.
